메이지 일본의 풍경 발견: 『내국여행 일본명소도회』

Abstract

이 글에서는 1888년부터 1890년까지 출판된 『일본명소』(전 7권)을 통해서 메이지시대에 발견된 일 본 풍경이 무엇이었는지 알아보았다. 그 결과 『일본명소』가 발견한 일본은 천황을 매개로 하는 풍 경, 메이지시대의 국가 차원의 슬로건인 문명개화와 식산흥업을 구현한 풍경, 새로 영토로 편입된 지 역을 일본 속에 존재하는 타자로 시각화한 풍경이었음을 확인했다. 이것은 훗날 시가의 『일본풍경 론』이 과학적으로 일본 풍경을 발견할 수 있는 가교 역할을 하는 풍경이었다. 이런 의미에서 『일본 명소』는 단순한 여행안내서가 아니라, 시가의 『일본풍경론』이 발견한 일본을 이해하고 받아들일 수 있는 토대를 마련한 심상지리서였다

This paper aims to explore the significance of Japans landscapes in the Illustrated Guide Book for Travelers around Japan (total 7 volumes), published from 1888 to 1890 in the Meiji Period. The examined landscapes include the landscapes using the emperor as a vehicle, landscapes visualizing the Meiji governments national slogans such as the civilization and enlightenment policies and its industrialization initiative, and other landscapes illustrating newly added areas as the other within Japan. These landscapes set precedence to those in the Shigas Japanese Landscape, which views the Japanese landscape from a scientific perspective. In this sense, the Illustrated Guide Book for Travelers around Japan should not be regarded as a simple travel guidebook but as an imagined geography of modern Japan, building a cornerstone to understand and accept Japan discovered in the Shigas Japanese Landscape.
