한류의 매력과 동아시아 문화네트워크

Abstract

최근 들어 한국의 TV 드라마, 대중음악, 영화 등이 동아시아 각국으로 활발하게 진출하면서 소위 한류(韓流)열풍이 불고 있다. 게다가 온라인 게임이나 인터넷 커뮤니티의 성공은 디지털 콘텐츠 산업에 대한 전망을 밝게 한다. 이 글은 21세기 문화세계정치의 시각에서 최근 주목받고 있는 한류의 의미와 한계를 살펴보았다. 이 글의 문제의식은 한류의 단편적인 성공과 실패의 사례에 대한 소개의 차원을 넘어서 한류를 통해서 드러나는 21세기 매력정치와 네트워크의 부상을 인식해야 한다는 것이었다. 이러한 시각에서 볼 때, 한류 연구는 자연스럽게 21세기 세계정치의 변환이라는 맥락에서 본 문화변환의 논의로 연결되어야 한다. 이러한 시각은 기존의 아날로그 한류 현상에 대한 분석뿐만 아니라 새로이 주목받고 있는 디지털 한류의 잠재력, 그리고 동아시아 문화네트워크의 구축과정에서 차지하는 국가의 역할을 살펴보는 데 있어서도 매우 유용하다.

In recent years, the so-called Korean Wave is booming as the Korean cultural products, such as TV drama, popular music, and movies, are being actively exported to East Asian countries. Moreover, the success of online game industry and Internet community services is regarded as an example reflecting the rosy future for digital contents industries in Korea. This paper examines implications and limitations of the Korean Wave from the perspective of global cultural politics in the 21st century. The main argument of this paper is that we have not only to move beyond looking at episodes about the success or failure of Korean cultural products in the East Asian market, but also pay attention to a deep aspect of soft power and network politics in the Korean Wave. From this perspective, the studies of the Korean Wave should be developed into the analytical research of culture transformation within the context of global transformations in the 21st century. This approach must be very useful in analyzing the current boom of the Korean Wave as an analogue phenomenon and furthermore the potential of the Korean Wave in the digital domain-ie)cyberspace. It also contributes in understanding the proper role of the state in building cultural networks in East Asia.
