세계화와 문화 - 자본, 소통, 정체성의 긴장과 이완

Abstract

문화 세계화에 관한 기존의 논의는 중심과 주변, 지배와 피지배, 보편과 특수, 강한 문화와 약한 문화의 이분법적이 구도에 의해 진행되었다. 이러한 양단론적인 접근은 문화가 지닌 구성적 복합성과 중층적 구속성을 읽어내기에는 한계가 있다. 본 논문은 문화에 관한 기존의 동질화와 이질화 논쟁을 넘어 글로벌 문화의 논리와 동학을 제시한다. 먼저 문화의 실체를 자본으로서의 문화, 소통으로서의 문화, 정체성으로서의 문화로 개념화하였으며, 로컬에서 나타나는 글로벌 문화의 동학을 자본과 소통과 정체성의 긴장과 이완의 함수 관계로 설정하였다. 아울러 글로벌과 로컬의 상호작용을 교차하여 강한 글로벌과 강한 로컬의 접합이 오늘날 가장 지배적인 형태임을 강조하였다. 세계화 시대의 문화는 글로벌의 일방이나 로컬의 저항이라는 단순 구도로서는 독해될 수 없으며, 상호작용의 다양한 배합과 지역적인 것의 다양한 조정 양식에 의해 형성된다는 점을 주장하였다.

There is much debate currently on globalization of culture. In its simplest classification, the body of literature has been developing in a dichotomous way, classifying the core and the periphery, the domination and the subordination, the universal and the particular. the strong culture and the weak culture, and the global and the local. This paper seeks to provide an account that makes sense of the logic and complexity of the cultural globalization. In this paper, we attempt to compile a theoretical argument of the culture which manifests itself in three ways: culture as a capital, culture as a communication, and culture as an identity. Also I present different types of the interplay between globalness and localness and suggest the simultaneous coexistence of the strong global and the strong local as the overall tendency observed in contemporary society. The global contents are prevailing but at the same time strongly embedded in the local legacy, reinterpretation, and resistance in conjunction with the three ways of cultural manifestation
