한국 텔레비전 생산 연구의 실태 진단 - 성과, 한계와 가능성

Abstract

이 논문은 텔레비전 생산 연구의 현황과 문제점을 진단하고 가능한 몇 가지 대안을 제안한다. 그간 생산 연구는 대상 매체나 장르, 연구주제 등에서 양적으로 크게 성장했지만, 생산과정에서 다양한 요인들의 교차 방식을 진하게 묘사하고 개념화하는 수준으로 진전시킨 연구는 드물었다. 이러한 한계는 주로 현장에 대한 접근이 제한적이었던 탓이지만, 수집한 자료를 맥락화하고 재해석하는 비판적 자세 부족에서도 기인한다. 따라서 방법론 측면에서 가령, 수집한 진술에서 나타나는 모순이나 양가성을 비판적으로 해독하는 방식을 시도한다든지, 현장 접근 기회의 부족을 보완하기 위해 국지적 사례나 생애사 분석 등의 우회 전략도 시도할 필요가 있다. 또한 참여관찰이나 심층인터뷰 외에도 내용분석 등 외부에서 쉽게 얻을 수 있는 분석 결과를 입체적으로 활용하고, 공동 연구를 활성화할 필요도 있다. This paper aims to review the status of production studies in Korean television research, and make a few suggestions for the future research. Over the past decades, production studies have expanded enormously in terms of diversity of media, genre and topics. Yet few research has contributed to significant conceptualization, based on thick description of how diverse factors interact on the site of production. Such drawbacks are not only related to limited access to the field, but also to a lack of critical stance, that may contextualize and reinterpret the collected data. Therefore, in methodological terms, researchers may focus on the way interviewees talk and interpret critically contradictions or ambivalences in their statements, or attempt at alternative approaches, such as case studies or life history methods, to compensate the insufficient access. Or in addition to participant observation or indepth interviews, other strategies may include: co-work among researchers with heterogeneous backgrounds; data from content analyses that are easily available to outsiders, and then can be compared with internally obtained results.
