Abstract
There is much evidence that atherosclerosis and
serum lipids concentrations are associated even though
a causal relationship has not been definitely demonstrated The relative importance of the various factors
which determine serum lipid levels has been a subject
for study. However, for body fatness the data are
meager and conflicting.
The serum cholesterol, triglyceride and totallipid
levels were measured and the lipoprotein fraction
ratios and high·density lipoprotein cholesterol levels
were observed by electrophoresis method in 37 obese,
20 overweight, 45 underweight and 116 normal weight
subjects to investigate the interrelationship of
serum lipids with body weight in Korean.
Similar measurements and observations were made
in 46 patients with cerebrovascular accident and 49
patients with hypertension.
The results obtained are summarized as follow"
1. Serum cholesterol and total lipid levels showed
significant correlation with relative body weight in
normal male subjects, but no correlation in female
normal subjects. Serum triglyceride level showed n 。
correlation with relative body weight in normal male
subjects.
2. Serum cholesterol level showed significant correlation
with % fat in normal male subjects, but no
correlation in female subjects. Serum triglyceride and
toal lipid levels showed no correlation with % fat
in normal male and female subjects.
3. The mean values of serum cholesterol, triglyceride
and total lipid were significantly higher in obese
persons , patients with cerebrovascular accident and
patients with hypertension than in normal weight
subjects.
4. The mean value of serum cholesterol was signi M
ficantly lower in female underweight persons and the
mean value of triglyceride was significantly lower in
male underweight persons than in normal weight
subjects
5. The pre-p-lipoprotein fraction in obese persons,
patients with cerebrovascular accident and patients
with hypertension gave higher value than in normal
weight subjects.
6. The a-lipoprotein fraction in underweight persons
gave higher value than in normal weight subjeets.
7. The ratio of serum high-density lipoprotein choIesterol
to total cholesterol in underweight subjects
- 380
was high Er than in r.orma! weight εubjonly in female subjects.
