예술이라는 종교의 미디어: 반 데르 레이우의 예술신학

Abstract

지금까지 종교와 예술의 문제는 주로 예술 작품의 종교적 내용이나 구조를 분석하는 것에 집중되었다. 예술의 종교성을 입증하면서 우리는 세상 모든 것의 기저에 종교적 충동이 내재해 있다는 것을 확인하곤 한다. 또한 예술이야말로 종교를 표현하는 가장 훌륭한 도구라는 생각을 하기도 한다. 게다가 이러한 분석은 아름다운 성스러움이나 성스러운 아름다움을 이야기함으로써 종교와 예술의 상호 공모에 기여하기도 한다. 물론 종교가 예술을 자기 표현의 수단으로 이용했던 긴 역사가 있고, 예술이 종교보다 더 종교적으로 기능하면서 종교의 존재를 위협했던 시대도 있었다. 그러나 종교와 예술의 관계에 대한 이러한 논의는 전제된 종교 개념의 동선을 맴돌면서, 세상의 모든 것은 종교를 품고 있다는 범종교주의의 주장만을 반복할 가능성이 농후하다. 세상의 어떤 것도 종교적 해석을 피할 수는 없다. 이 글은 종교와 예술의 문제를 통해 종교의 미디어에 대한 논의를 전개하기 위한 것이다. 우리는 예술의 물질적, 감각적 차원을 부각시키기 위해 예술의 각 장르가 갖는 매체적 독특성을 해명하기 위해 노력할 것이다. 그리고 각 예술 장르의 독특한 물질성이 어떻게 서로 다른 메시지를 전달하는지를 이해하고자 할 것이다. 즉 이 글은 미디어 이론의 관점에서 예술의 각 장르가 발신하는 독특한 종교적 메시지를 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 우리는 헤라르뒤스 반데르 레이우(Gerardus van der Leeuw)가 펼친 종교와 예술에 대한 논의에 많은 부분을 의존할 것이다. 그러나 우리는 반 데르 레이우의 신학적 미학을 그대로 답습하지는 않을 것이다. 그보다 우리는 신화와 의례, 언어와 몸짓 같은 이원적인 구도 속에서 논의되는 종교 개념이 얼마나 빈약한 것인지를 이야기할 것이다. 굳이 이 글에서 예술을 거론하는 것은 종교를 이야기하는 어휘, 개념, 시각을 전환하기 위한 것이다. As a rule, the problems in relation between religion and art end up finding the religious structure or meaning of works of art. We would think that art is an optimized tool for expressing the religious things. Art is artificial. If a work of art is scared, therefore, it creates a paradox in that we can manufacture the sacred thing by human hands. Here the beautiful mediates between the profane and the sacred. However profane a thing may be, it can transform into the sacred thing by adding to an obscure property of beauty. That is, beauty makes the profane into the sacred. Thanks to the category of beauty, humans can manufacture the sacred to the taste of humans, instead of searching for the sacred as a natural raw thing. So art plays a decisive role in bringing religion down to earth. To understand this medial function of art, we need to consider not so much the religious structure of art as the artistic structure of religion. According to the principle of division of artistic media, religion divides itself into several different domains, which respectively make and transmit different religiosities. In this way we can redraw a geography of religion with respect to species of art, and finally try to draw up an outline of new conception of religion. Art is a kind of mouthpiece for religion, and therefore religion will become mute without artistic media. Religion without art will be in danger of losing all sensual and perceptive aspects. by means of which religion can acquire time and space, visibility and audibility, Therefore art is an indispensable communicative media for religion. Under this perspective we intend to speculate each species of art, namely dance, drama, literature, picture, architecture, and music.
