아리스토텔레스 윤리학에서 행복, 욕구 만족, 그리고 합리성

Abstract

아리스토텔레스의 행복이론은 행복(에우다이모니아)을 쾌락이나 욕구만족 등의 주관적 상태로 여기지 않고 객관적으로 성취해야 할 활동으로 본다는 점에서 객관주의적 행복이론에 속한다. 그러나 아리스토텔레스가 행복의 주관적 측면인 쾌락이나 욕구만족을 무시하지는 않는다. 행복한 활동은 당연히 즐겁고, 행위자의 욕구를 만족시켜주는 활동이다. 그러나 모든 욕구만족이 행복이 아니라 객관적 기준을 만족시키는 욕구만이 행복을 지향하는 욕구이며, 그 객관적 기준이란 곧 합리성이다. 본 논문에서는 행복의 정의, 숙고와 실천추론의 차이, 실천적 지각의 중요성 등을 검토하여, 아리스토텔레스의 실천적 합리성이 연역추론의 모델로 환원될 수 없으며, 행동 결정의 절차적 타당성이나, 특정 목적 실현을 위한 기술적 효율성이 아님을 분명히 드러내고, 실천적 합리성은 행위자의 욕구구조에 내면화된 행복개념에 의존함을 밝히고자 한다. 이러한 작업은 근대 이후 지배적인 합리성 개념에 대한 비판적 검토의 계기를 마련하는 작업이라고 생각한다.

Aristotles theory of happiness can be categorized as objectivist theories of happiness in that it concerns happiness as the activity which is required to be achieved rather than the fulfilled state of the subjective pleasure or desire. One must not misapprehend it, however, such that Aristotle does not take pleasure and desire into an account of happiness. Any activity which is considered happy is pleasant and desire satisfying for sure. However, it doesnt work in reverse as not every desire-satisfying activity qualifies to be a happy activity. Only desire which meets the criteria for happiness - that is - rationality is considered as a desire in pursuit of happiness. I argue that Aristotles practical rationality cannot be reduced to the deductive reasoning, and that it is not rational for decision making processes nor technical efficacy in the pursuit a certain goal. Aristotles practical rationality indeed depends on the concept of happiness of which an agent is internalized. My argument will be demonstrated while I examine the definition of happiness, the difference between deliberation and practical reasoning. I also point out the significance of practical perception. This work provides a good opportunity to scrutinize the concept of rationality which has been dominated in the history of modern western philosophy.
