Abstract

The characteristics and the morphology of lower segment of normal pregnant uterus were observed in 40 normal fullterm pregnant women using ultrasonography with regard to its diagnostic value and clinical applicability_ As it is impossible to measure the exact thickness of anterior wall of lower segment of uterus , the interval of urinary bladder wall to fetal surface (B-F interval) was measured using ultrasonography, and minimum B-F interval was determined The results were summarized as follows 1. In 40 normal fullterm pregnant women, mini• mum B-F interval was 5. 4±1. 2mm. 2. In normal fullterm pregnant women, minimum B-F interval showed a tendency to decrease as gesta' tional period lengthened, but there was no statistical significance. 3. In 24 primigravidas, minimum B-F interval was 5.5±1. 3mm and it showed a tendency to decrease as gestational period lengthened. but there was no stat· istical significance. 4. In 16 multigravidas, minimum B•F interval was 5. 2±1. 2mm and it also showed a tendency to deerease as gestational period lengthened, but there was no statistical significance The above results suggest that ultrasonography is a very useful objective and non-invasive diagnostic tool in the measurement of the characteristics of lower segment of pregnant uterus and the assessment of progress and prognosis of labor.
