중등학교 외국어 교육의 현황과 전망

Abstract

In order to arouse students interest and active participation in learning English, teachers are expected to resort to a variety of teaching aids and ways to promote communicative competence of students, but the traditional grammar-translation method of teaching still hangs around in high school upper classes. Extracurricular activities in English are performed in various clubs for English conversation, screen English, English novels, English reading, English newspapers, etc. Before the regular class hours in the morning, some schools make time for developing listening comprehension ability of students. In addition to these, various contests for English speaking, English listening comprehension, and English word power, etc. are held. Each high school is encouraged to offer lessons on multiple foreign languages. Owing to their own peculiar surrounding circumstances, more than 60 % of high schools still teach only one foreign language except English. japanese enjoys attracting the most students, and German stands the second and French the third. Beginning in the year 2002, each middle school can teach one of the seven Practical Foreign Languages': German, French, Spanish, Chinese, japanese, Russian, and Arabic. Teaching practical foreign languages with a focus on developing listening and speaking abilities will be emphasized, along with diversified teaching aids. Cross cultural education will be intensified to cultivate refined world citizens. Each lesson will be prepared to meet requirements of students, and students will enjoy diverse teaching & learning tailored to fit their learning abilities.
