동아시아담론: 이론화를 향한 시론

Abstract

동아시아담론은 동아시아의 역사문제를 풀어나가려 하는 지식인들이 전개하는 논의이다. 아직은 동아시아를 사고하고 토론을 전개한다는 함의로서의 동아시아담론은 지적인 상상을 넘어서 사상화, 이론화로 가는 과정에 있다. 본고는 동아시아담론을 비판의 방법론으로 삼아야 한다고 제안한다. 19세기 서세동점에 대한 저항의식에서 생성된 동아시아의식은 21세기에는 동아시아담론으로 계승 발전되고 지적인 상상에서 나온 새로운 구상들을 제시하고 있다. 담론의 내용에서는 지역의 공통적인 지향과 국가에 따라 혹은 담론을 전개하는 주체에 따라 개별적인 특성이 나타나면서 전개되는 것을 발견할 수 있다. 이러한 주장들에는 동아시아에 통용될 수 있는 보편적인 흐름이 있지만, 그 안을 세밀하게 들여다보면 보편화를 방해하는 요인도 있다. 본 연구에서는 담론의 보편적인 흐름을 찾아 이론화를 시도해 보면서, 또한 이론의 일반화를 방해하는 요인을 지적해 본다.

The East Asian discourse can be defined as an intellectual campaign as well as an academic discussion, which tries to address historical issues in the region. The discourse still remains an intellectual imagination and is not yet developed into a matured thought or theory. This paper argues that the discourse is more effective as a methodology of criticism on regional issues than as an intellectual-civic campaign aiming at realizing some tangible results such as East Asian community or other political ends. With this in mind, this paper, firstly, tries to argue characteristics of the discourse, particularly in the analogy between incomplete modernism and post-modernism. Secondly, this study tries to define a concept of East Asia, discerning East Asian understanding of East Asia from Western one. Thirdly, it can be suggested that major arguments by the East Asian discourse be reexamined from the point of view of the Habermasian theory of public sphere and communicative rationality. Thirdly, the study points out some theoretical and practical setbacks that prevent the discourse from being developed into both a matured theory and a region-wide concrete vision based on a wide range of concurrence in East Asian intellectual-civic networks. These barriers are generally originated in a different understanding with regard to the regional issues among East Asians.
