멕시코인의 정체성과 문화에 대한 사무엘 라모스의 관점과 한계 : 『멕시코의 인간상과 문화』를 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문의 목적은 멕시코인의 정체성과 문화와 관련하여 사무엘 라모스의 『멕시코의 인간상과 문화』에 나타난 저자의 관점과 성과 그리고 그 한계를 분석하는데 있다. 멕시코 혁명 이후 멕시코의 사회문화적 패러다임을 주도하던 민족주의 세력과 기성 지식인의 유럽중심주의적 인식론에 대한 반발로 출간된 라모스의 『멕시코의 인간상과 문화』는 멕시코인의 정체성 문제를 생물학적 관점에서 심리학적 관점으로 옮긴 최초의 저작으로 평가받고 있다. 이 저작에서 라모스는 대립적 관계에 있던 유럽주의와 민족주의를 비판함과 동시에 멕시코의 고유한 문화형성을 위해 양자를 절충할 것을 제안한다. 그는 멕시코인에 내재된 특질이 열등감에 있음을 밝히면서 열등감의 원인인 유럽인 되기에서 벗어나 유럽을 통한 멕시코인 되기를 주장한다. 그러나 그는 국민국가의 사회문화적 주체와 문화의 범주에서 원주민의 존재와 문화를 배재함으로써 유럽중심적 사유에서 벗어나지 못하는 한계를 드러내고 있다.

The aim of this article is to make a critical approach to perspective on Mexican culture and identity in Samuel Ramos Profile of man and culture in Mexico. Thiswork inwhich the author develops an argument against revolutionary nationalism and Eurocentrism of the intellectuals of that time is undoubtedly the first attempt of the psychoanalytic approach toMexican cultural identity. Criticizing both opposing ideological positions, Ramos underlines the need for an eclectic way to formthe identical culture ofMexico. He argues that one of the fundamental characteristics of Mexicans is inferiority and he proposes to overcome this to be Mexican through the European culture beyond becoming European. However, Ramos paradoxically fails to escape the Eurocentrism in that he does not recognize the indigenous culture and indios as a social subject of the nation-state.
