동아시아에서의 <대승기신론> 해석의 전개

Abstract

<대승기신론>은 동아시아 불교사상전통에 있어서 핵심적 논서이다. 다양한 교리적 입장들을 포용하는 <기신론>의 이론적 요소와 이 논서의 여래장如來藏 개념은 동아시아 불교사상전통의 정립에 지대한 영향을 미쳤다. 근현대 불교학계에 있어서도 <기신론>의 사상은 논의의 중심주제 중 하나이다. 현대 한국불교학계에 있어서는 <기신론>에 대한 연구가 원효元曉(617∼686)의 <기신론소>와 <대승기신론별기>를 중심으로 꾸준히 진행되어 왔고, 그 결과 원효의 <기신론> 주석에 대한 연구의 괄목할 만한 성장과 성과가 이루어졌다. 하지만 한국불교학계에서 원효의 <기신론소>와 <별기>를 중심으로 <기신론>에 대한 체계적 이해가 가능하게 되었다 하더라도, 원효의 주석을 매개로 <기신론> 이해가 진행됨에 따라 원효 혹은 한국의 틀을 넘어선 <기신론> 사상의 의미는 상대적으로 소홀히 다루어졌다고 보여진다. <기신론>은 6세기 중반에 등장한 이후 긴 사상적 궤적을 가진 논서임을 고려할 때 <기신론>의 연구가 더 넓은 범위에서 수행되어야 할 것임은 분명하다. 게다가, 원효의 <기신론> 사상은 동아시아 전체의 맥락에서 조망될 때 그 사상적 의의가 더 명확해질 수 있음 또한 명백하다. 이 논문에서는, <기신론>의 연구범위의 확장에 대한 이러한 필요성을 바탕으로 하여, 중국, 한국, 일본에서 현대에 이르기까지 전개된 <기신론>에 대한 논의를 동아시아 전체의 맥락에서 개괄, 정리하려 한다. 이러한 <기신론> 사상 연구사의 포괄적인 조망을 통해 전체 동아시아 불교전통에서의 <기신론> 논의의 다양성을 고찰하고, 이러한 맥락 안에서 한국불교의 <기신론> 연구의 현재 위치를 조명해 보고자 한다.

The Awakening of Faith is a seminal treatise in the East Asian Buddhist tradition. Its doctrinal aspects, which encompass the different perspectives of various Buddhist schools, have had a major influence on the process of the establishment of East Asian Buddhism. In modern Korean Buddhist scholarship, research on the Awakening of Faith has been conducted focusing on Wŏnhyos 元曉(617 ～686) commentaries, such as the Kisillon so 起信論疏 and the Taesŭng kisillon pyŏlgi 大乘起信論別記. As a result, Korean scholarship has reached a certain level of understanding of the Awakening of Faith based on the constant study on Wŏnhyos commentaries. However, the broader doctrinal significance of the Awakening of Faith does not appear to have been properly considered. Given that the Awakening of Faith has a long historical trajectory in East Asia, the study on the treatise should be conducted in the broader context of East Asian Buddhism. Furthermore, Wŏnhyos thoughts on the Awakening of Faith may be better understood from the broad perspective. Considering the need to extend the scope of research on the Awakening of Faith, this article presents an overview of the process of accepting the Awakening of Faith in China, Korea, and Japan up until modern times in the broader context of East Asian Buddhism. By doing this, I disclose that there have been various doctrinal perspectives revolving around the Awakening of Faith in East Asia, and, in this light, suggest that Wŏnhyo-centered Korean Buddhist scholarship on the Awakening of Faith should be reconsidered.
