베그르손 철학에서 시간은 과연 잴 수 없는 것인가? : 베르그손 철학이 아인슈타인의 상대성 이론에 대해 가질 수 있는 올바른 관계를 정립하기 위한 시론 (2)

Abstract

지난 번의 논문(베르그손 철학에서의 시간과 공간의 관계와 형이상학의 과제)에서 우리는 베르그손이 생각하는 시간과 공간의 관계가 어떠한 것인지를 다루었다. 오늘 우리의 이 논문은 지난 번의 논문에서 우리가 제기한 이 문제를 올바르게 이해하는 것이 왜 베르그손 철학과 아인슈타인의 상대성 이론 사이에서 성립할 수 있는 진정한 관계가 무엇인지를 해명하는 데 있어서 핵심적인 열쇠가 되는가를 말해줄 것이다. 베르그손이 상대성 이론에 대해 행한 온갖 다양한 다른 비판들을 검토하는 일을 뒤로 미루고 우리는 곧장 세계의 참된 객관적 구조는 시-공간 4차원이라는 상대성 이론의 생각과 시간과 공간에 대한 베르그손의 생각을 맞닥뜨리는 데로 나아갔다. 이것은 이 주제를 먼저 다루는 것이 앞으로 우리가 상대성 이론에 대한 베르그손의 반응을 평가하는 데 있어서 사용할 방법이 무엇인지를 가장 모범적으로 예시해줄 수 있다고 생각해서 이다: 상대성 이론이 제시하는 여러 혁신적인 생각들을 낱낱이 하나하나 비판해가는 베르그손 속에서 우리는 그때마다 이 상대방뿐만 아니라 자기 자신에 대해서도 끊임없이 오해하고 있는 베르그손을 보게 될 것이다. 상대성 이론의 주장들은 서로가 서로를 뒷받침하는 논리 정연한 것들이기에, 이 이론의 어느 하나의 주장에 대한 비판은 다른 주장들에 대한 비판 역시 필연적으로 수반하기 마련이다. 베르그손은 그의 오류가(즉 상대성 이론에 대한 그의 잘못된 비판이) 논리 정연한 일관된 오류가 되게 하는 데 있어서는 오류가 없다. 베르그손 철학에서 시간은 과연 잴 수 없는 것인가?라는 물음에 대해 그렇지 않다라고 대답함으로써 우리는 베르그손 철학과 상대성 이론 사이를 화해 불가능한 것처럼 보이게 만들었던 가장 큰 어려움 중 하나를 넘어서는 데 성공하였다고 생각한다. 이제 다른 어려움들이 하나하나씩 이 뒤를 이어 나타날 것이다. 하지만 이 어려움들을 해결하는 방식은 훨씬 더 간단하거나, 적어도 더 명료할 것이라고 기대한다. In my previous article, Bergsons idea on the relation between time and space and the task of philosophy, I have discussed Bergsons idea of time and space. In this paper I attempt to show that only by giving up our conventional understanding can we re-establish the proper relation Bergsons philosophy could have toward Einsteins theory of Relativity. I examine the compatibility of Bergsons idea of time and space with the relativist idea of the world as space-temporal of the four dimensions. I put aside Bergsons critique of each essential step that the theory of Relativity has passed before arriving at the final conception. I chose this way of exposition, which inverses somewhat the order that Bergson himself has followed because I believe that this reveals most readily that in all his critiques, Bergson misunderstood constantly not only his opponents, but also himself such as in the real implication of his own philosophy. According to the theory of Relativity, all moments are related to one another in a rigorously consistent way, such that one moment can not affect any other without consequently affecting all the others together. It seems to me that Bergson has committed no error in making his error (i.e, his erroneous interpretation of the theory of Relativity) consistently. In order to demonstrate that there is a essential compatibility between Bergsons philosophy and Einstein's theory of Relativity, I ask the question, Is time never measurable in Bergsons philosophy? I respond in the negative, an answer which I believe, enables me to clearly overcome one of the most difficult obstacles considered until now which absolutely denies the possibility of a compatibility. I will successively challenge other obstacles but I believe that the solutions will be more easily obtainable or, at least, will take a more simple and clearer forms.
