Abstract
A Supercavitating technology has been actively researched centered on military advanced countries as a technology proposed to overcome the speed limit of conventional underwater vehicles. The supercavitating state is that the cavities is fully developed to be able to completely cover a whole vehicle body. Most of the drag force of the underwater vehicle is caused by the frictional resistance, and there is a limit to increase the speed of the underwater vehicle by increasing thrust force. By using the supercavitating, the frictional resistance can be extremely reduced by removing the contact surface with the water, and it is possible to travel at a speed of 5 to 8 times that of the conventional underwater vehicle.
Although the fast speed of the supercavitating underwater vehicle has the advantage of shortening the reaching time to the target, it has a disadvantage that it is difficult to guarantee the stability of the vehicle because the hydrodynamic force is changed discontinuously and nonlinearly according to the state change of the moving body and the cavity. In this research, a study was made on a method to protect the operation envelope so that the supercavitating underwater vehicle maintains the stability and does not cause a planing in the supercavitating state. Dynamics modeling of the supercavitating underwater vehicle includes cavity size modeling, cavity center axis deformation and time delay modeling, modeling of cavitator and fins, and forces acting on the wetted body. Through this nonlinear integrated equation of motion, we can analyze the physical characteristics of the supercavitating underwater vehicle and simulate the vehicle maneuver.
In order to determine the specifications of the vehicle to be used in the simulation, the studies on design constraint of the vehicle were performed. Cavitator diameter was chosen to allow the cavity could create the supercavity cavity at maximum speed and the entire body could be covered. The fin span length was chosen to ensure the stability of the vehicle. The constraints related to propulsion system such as magnitude and duration time of thrust force were proposed considering the size and combustion type of propellant. The main specifications of the vehicle which can reach the target distance in the shortest time while satisfying the proposed constraint are calculated and applied to the simulation.
The operation envelope protection for a supercavitating vehicle is a method to control the vehicle attitude and the cavitation number so that the vehicle does not deviate from the state in which it can maintain the stability and follow the given tracking command. The operation envelope protection was divided into a method of protecting the limits of the vehicle by changing the cavity size by controlling the cavity number, and a method of avoiding the planing by limiting the attitude of the vehicle. The operation envelope protection techniques through the cavitation number control considered the stability of the cavity itself, stability of the vehicle, and avoidance of planing. The operation envelope protection scheme through the attitude control of vehicle is divided into a limit estimation that predicts the vehicle attitude at the moment of planing and a limit protection that generates the command that does not make the vehicle exceed the estimated attitude limit.
L1 adaptive controller is used as a vehicle attitude control method to make vehicle follow command generated in the limit protection scheme. The controller is designed to compensate modeling uncertainty through L1 adaptive control technique and to guarantee transition and steady state performance. To estimate the modeling uncertainty, the artificial neural network was applied to calculate the vehicle state and control inputs in state predictor.
Based on the proposed dynamics modeling of a supercavitating underwater vehicle, a simulation was performed to simulate the maneuvering situation. Based on the simulation, we verify the validity of the modeling of the supercavitating underwater vehicle by comparing it with the existing running test, and confirmed the performance of the proposed operation envelope protection system and the L1 neural network adaptive controller. Simulation results show that the proposed 6 DOF equation of motion can analyze the dynamic characteristics and simulate the vehicle motion.
The studies on dynamics modeling and the design constraints of supercavitating underwater vehicle can be used to determine the specifications and the desired performance in the initial development stage. Based on the proposed operation envelope protection and L1 neural network adaptive control method, the stability and tracking performance can be guaranteed in spite of the modeling uncertainty in the actual operating situation.
