미니멀리즘 사례연구

Abstract

In this study, the music of Arvo Pärt(1935- ), Ann Southam(1937– 2010), Louis Andriessen(1939-2021), Ryuichi Sakamoto(1952- ), and Kai Schumacher(1979- ) is examined by focusing on their characteristic techniques to study the minimalism music techniques appeared in their piano works. After eight years break, Arvo Pärt, born in Estonia, returned with his piano work Fur Alina(1976), applying the technique called Tintinnabuli. The symmetric monotone after the first tone that rings deeply like a bell ringing, the left hand only consisting of three tones, and the right hand with calm movement showed the mood of calmness well, as if representing the period of silence he had. Glass Houses(1981)by Ann Southam who was born in Canada, used one of the representative minimalism music technique called Ostinato which demand a high degree of attention and independence of both hands. The infinite possibilities were shown by use of the combination of repetitive left hand and rapidly changing right hand. Louis Andriessen, born in Netherlands, produced the music that exists on the border between art music and popular music by incorporating the element of Jazz. His artwork Hoketus(1976) showed the Hocket technique and various experimental attitudes away from the regularity of previous minimalism music by utilizing diverse instrumental combinations, irregular accents, and the use of sound machines. Ryuichi Sakamoto, born in Japan, showed a variety of activities for the public from classical music to electric band and film music activities. He composed popular music with simple and concise melodies rather than showing the strict rules and continuity in the early minimalism, his music has been included as a part of new age music. Kai Schumacher, born in Germany, was influenced by a wide range of music genres from classical music to contemporary music as well as ambient music and post rock, arranged various music genres such as contemporary music, pop, and electric music into the minimalism music for piano. He created easily accessible minimalism piano works like popular music using the structural form of songs such as verse, bridge, chorus, etc., and by shortening the length of a song.

본 연구는 피아노 작품에 나타난 미니멀리즘 음악 기법을 연구하고자 아르보 패르트(Arvo Pärt, 1935- ), 앤 사우담(Ann Southam, 1937-2010), 루이 안드리센(Louis Andriessen, 1939-2021), 류이치 사카모토(Ryuichi Sakamoto, 1952- ), 카이 슈마허(Kai Schumacher, 1979- )의 특징적인 기법을 중심으로 그들의 음악을 살펴보았다. 에스토니아 출생 아르보 패르트는 틴티나불리(Tintinnabuli) 기법을 Für Alina(1976)작품에 적용하여 8년의 공백기를 끝내고 복귀한다. 종의 울림처럼 깊고 길게 울리는 첫 음 뒤로 발생되는 대칭되는 단음, 세 음만으로 구성된 왼손과 차분한 움직임을 가지는 오른손의 멜로디는 그가 가졌던 침묵의 시기를 대변하듯 침착한 분위기를 잘 나타낸다. 미니멀리즘 음악의 대표적 기법 중 하나인 오스티나토(Ostinato)를 사용한 캐나다 출생 앤 사우담의 Glass Houses(1981) 작품은 왼손과 오른손의 독립성을 요구하여 고도의 집중력을 필요로 한다. 반복적인 왼손과 변화하는 오른손이 만들어 낼 수 있는 여러 조합으로 가능성의 무궁무진함을 나타내었다. 네덜란드 출생 루이 안드리센은 재즈적 요소를 넣어 예술음악과 대중음악 사이의 경계에 존재하는 음악을 만들었다. 그의 작품 Hoketus(1976)에서 호켓(Hocket)기법과 악기 조합구성, 불규칙적인 악센트, 음향 기계의 사용 등으로 기존의 미니멀리즘 음악의 규칙성에서 탈피한 실험적인 모습을 보여준다. 일본 출생 류이치 사카모토는 클래식 음악부터 전자 밴드, 영화 음악까지 여러 대중적인 음악 활동을 하였다. 그는 초기 미니멀리즘의 엄격한 규칙과 연속성을 나타내기보다 단순하며 명확한 멜로디를 사용하여 대중적인 음악을 작곡하였고, 그의 음악은 뉴에이지 음악의 일부분으로 포함되기도 한다. 고전 음악부터 현대음악까지, 그리고 앰비언트(Ambient)음악과 포스트 록 등 넓은 음악 장르에 영향을 받은 독일 출생 카이 슈마허는 현대 음악, 팝, 전자 음악 등 여러 장르의 음악을 피아노를 위한 미니멀리즘 음악으로 편곡하였다. 가요의 구조 형식인 벌스, 브릿지, 코러스 등을 사용하고 곡의 길이를 짧게 하여 대중음악과 같이 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 미니멀리즘 피아노 작품들을 만들어내었다.
