채식지도를 만드는 사람들의 장소만들기: 관계적 행동주의의 관점에서

Abstract

시민사회에서는 기후위기로 대표되는 각종 재난과 인수공통감염병, 환경 파괴로 인해 인간과 동물 간의 관계에 대한 성찰로서 자발적, 자생적으로 채식을 확산하고 채식친화적인 환경을 만들기 위해 채식지도가 등장했다. 이 연구에서는 관계적 행동주의의 관점에서 채식지도를 만드는 사람들을 사례로 일상의 공간에서 행해지는 장소만들기 실천의 의미를 탐색했다. 관계적 행동주의란 사적 영역에서 주변 사람들이 환경에 덜 영향을 주는 선택을 하도록 물질적, 정신적으로 지원하는 행동들을 통칭한다. 이 관계적 행동주의를 통해 기존의 사회운동 연구에서 간과되었던 평범한 시민들의 비가시화된 연대를 설명할 수 있다. 이 연구에서는 지도라는 매개물이 관계적 행동주의를 심화시키는 대안적 장소가 될 수 있는지 관계적, 물리적, 재현적 차원에서 장소만들기를 살펴보았다. 채식지도를 만드는 사람들은 자신의 불편함 해소뿐만 아니라 타인에 대한 고려와 채식 전파를 위해 채식지도를 만드는 동기를 다층화해나갔다. 그 과정에서 온라인과 지역을 활동 범위로 하여 다른 채식주의자들과 관계를 형성하고 활용하여 지도를 만들어나갔으며, 지역의 식당과 협력 또는 긴장 관계를 유지하는 다양한 전략을 사용했다. 지도가 매개하는 세 가지 차원의 장소만들기는 상호작용하며 관계적 행동주의와 서로를 심화시키고 있었다. 이들의 노력은 궁극적으로 지속가능한 사회를 위해 채식친화적인 환경 만들기와 채식선택권 확보에 중요한 역할을 하고 있지만, 이들에게 채식선택권의 의미는 전환의 수단이자 시작점에 가까웠다. 오히려 가능성은 이들이 새롭게 창출한 세 가지 차원의 장소만들기에 있었는데, 먼 미래가 아닌 지금 여기에서 대안적인 사회를 지도 위에서 재구성하고 있었기 때문이다. 이 연구는 관계적 행동주의와 장소만들기가 서로를 심화시킬 수 있다는 것을 밝혔다는 데에 학술적 의의가 있다. 채식지도를 사례로 보여준 관계적 행동주의의 일면은 오늘날 지속가능한 사회로의 전환을 위해 문화적 규범의 변화를 도모하는 시민들의 행동을 이해하는 데 도움을 준다. 이 연구에서는 시민들이 어떻게 사회를 변화시켜나가고 있는지 더 잘 이해하기 위해서는 사적 영역에서 가시적으로 잘 드러나지 않는 부분에 주목해야 함을 시사한다.

In attempt to spread voluntary-based veganism culture and to create a vegan-friendly environment, the vegan map has recently emerged in our civil society. The emergence of the vegan map also reflects the relationship between humans and animals due to various disasters represented by the climate crisis, common infectious diseases, and environmental destruction. This study explores the meaning of place-making practices in everyday spaces by taking the perspective of relational activism through the case of vegan cartographers. Although there have been several studies understanding veganism culture in the context of social movement, research examining the invisible solidarity of ordinary citizens has been scarce. Therefore, in order to explain the veganism social movement, this study sheds light on relational activism, the term which refers to actions in the private area that support other people both materially and mentally to guide them to choose less environmentally negative behavior. In this vein, this study aims to focus on place-making in terms of three dimensions of relationship, physical, and representation to see if the map as the mediator can be an alternative place to deepen relational activism. Vegan cartographers have multilayered their motivation to create vegan maps not only for their convenience but also to consider other vegans and to spread veganism to society. In the process, they created the maps by forming and utilizing relationships with other vegans both online and offline and used various strategies to maintain cooperation or tension with local restaurants. The three dimensions of place-making mediated by maps interacted and deepened relational activism each other. Although vegan cartographers played a critical role in creating vegan-friendly environment and securing options for a sustainable society, what needs the most attention is the three new dimensions of the place they created. What was essential in their effort is that they were reconstructing an alternative society on the map now-here, not in the distant future. This study contributes to the existing literature in the fact that it reveals the interconnected relationship between relational activism and place-making that deepened each other. It also helps to understand citizens behavior in promoting changes in cultural norms for the transition to a sustainable society today. This study implies that in order to better understand how citizens are changing society, more attention should be paid to areas that are not visible in the private area.
