통합된 세계를 향하여: Ezra Pound의 시와 사상연구

Abstract

Interviewer: Are you more or less stuck? Pound: Okay. I am stuck. The question is, am I dead, as Messrs. A.B.C. might wish? In case I conk out, this is provisionally what I have to do: I must clarify obscurities; I must make clearer definite ideas or dissociations. I must find a verbal formula to combat the rise of brutality-the principle of order versus the split atom. There was a man in the bughouse, by the way, who insisted that the atom had never been split. Ezra Pound (l885~1972)가 20세기 초엽의 Modernism의 선구자로 여겨지는 까닭은 주로 그의 Imagism운동과 관련이 있다. Imagism운동은 19세기 영시의 感傷主義的인 매너리즘을 극복하고 간결하고 정확한 詩語를 바탕으로 한 詩風을 확립하고자하는 노력이었다. Pound를 비롯한 Imagists의 이러한 노력은 Stendhal, Flaubert, Maupassant등 불란서 작가들의 정확한 散文精神에 힘입은 바 크다. 초기의 Pound가 펼친 주장들은 한두 마디로 간단히 설명될 수 있는 것은 아니지만 역시 그 요체는 언어의 정확성(precision)이었다고 보아야 할 것이다. Imagism 운동은 image라는 말과 관련하여 그 視覺的요소를 강조하기도 하지만 이러한 요소는 비교적 나중에 강조된 것이고, Imagism운동 출발 당시의 image라는 말은 주로 언어의 정확성에 대한 주장과 관계가 깊다. 1918년에 시의언어가 가진 세 가지 기능을 melopoeia, Imagism, logopoeia로 나누었다가 나중에 Imagism의 시각적 요소를 강조하여 phanopoeia라는 말로 대체했을 때 조차도 그 시각적 요소가 정확성과 관련하여 논의되고 있고, melopoeia에 대한 Pound의 不信도 같은 문맥에서 다루어지고 있음에 주목할 필요가 있을 것이다.
