Description
Abstract

A Study on the Expression of Space of Memories through Combined Frames

-Based on My Own Works-

This study methodically elaborates my own paintings from 2012 to 2016 in order to narrate my three main themes: Combined Frames, Multi-Perspectives, and the Space of Memories. By discussing each works motives, purpose, theoretical backgrounds, as well as its physical working process, I wish to present an improved understanding of my works to the audience.

Sometimes we experience unique moments in our lives that are radically different from our ordinary routine. Personally, I treasure time periods that seem relatively longer or slower than usual, the precise moments that make me contemplate and linger in a particular environment. My paintings were thus created in the hopes of sharing these unusual experiences that intensely captivated my attention. Such experience is then transformed into visual images that I call the Combined Frames, which primarily have two functions. One is to grasp the audiences attention as those experience also occupied mine. Second is to work as a device that reproduce my visual experience onto a two dimensional surface.
Moreover, unlike most modern paintings or pictures that only capture a single moment in an individual event, the Combined Frames allow me to actively engage with the element of time by combining multiple perspectives in a single phenomenon that ultimately creates an extraordinary Space of Memories accompanied by my own interpretations.

Hence, this study intends to examine the definition of the Combined Frames and the process of how the Space of Memories is formed from my visual experiences along with analyzing its distinct formative features of expression.

The study is consist of five parts: Part I: Introduction, Part II: The significance and role of Combined Frames, Part III: The discussion of Space of Memories through Combined Frames, Part IV: Formative features and expression techniques, Part V: Conclusion.

In the introduction, I describe the motive and purpose behind the creation of the Combined Frames and briefly mention the studys overall substance and process.

In Part II, I try to elaborate on idea of the Combined Frames, to heighten its comprehension. Clause I examines the initial background that allowed the appearance of the Combined Frames concept and Clause II is mainly concerned about the significance and the role of the Combined Frames.

In Part III, I discuss my paintings representation as a whole including its utilization of the Combined Frames. Clause I explains how the disparate qualities of singular and multi-perspectives are integrated into the same surface to create an anomalous synthesis. Clause II demonstrates the element of time was expressed in a two dimensional setting. Clause III depicts the possibility of different appearance of memories created by various cognitive reflections. Clause IV reviews the creation of fabricated spaces through different times, spaces, memories and associations.

In Part IV, I describe my paintings formative features and expression techniques. Clause I explores each works specific compositions. Clause II examine the expressive method employed to portray my own interpretation of the bamboo groves. Clause III focuses on explaining the Jangji technique which was used widely used in all my works as well as how I approached coloring. Clause IV describes discloses on the purpose of the drawing animation as a way to expand on the idea of Combined Frames.

Part V summarize the main points of the study and the insights achieved in the process of creating my works.

Through this study, I hope to secure the theoretical foundation on the expression of Space of Memories through Combined Frames, which will act as a pillar for the development and the direction of my future works.
