Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to identify the material nature of Kants ethics and present an educational system based on it. Kants ethics are generally criticized for not presenting specific rules of action and making progress towards actual moral practice due to its formalism. However, Kant discussed how moral practice is actually possible through the concept of virtue and duties of virtue in his post-critical ethics, Doctrine of Virtue, and presented specific rules of action. Based on the discussion of Doctrine of Virtue, Kants On Education can be defined as education system of duties of virtue which includes fostering virtue and fulfilling duties of virtue.
The concept of virtue is defined as moral disposition in the struggle according to Doctrine of Virtue. Moral disposition is a good nature, willing to carry out a moral duty even though it is incomplete and wide. Also, as the phrase in the struggle suggests, virtue is not innate or natural, such as natural tendencies, but acquired will.
As the phrase an end that is at the same time a duty indicates, the concept of duties of virtue is an end that we can regard as duty. This implies a concept of end as a content under a specific duty, as well as a form of duty. These ends lie within the concepts of practical reason and are the universalizable ends—the ends itself, humanity—that can be found from our duties. Beyond the passive and formal view which makes a person not treat humanity as mere means, Kant regards the concept of duty as an active and practical one
treat humanity itself as end.
The concept of virtue and duties of virtue is closely related to educational theory in that it is connected to the practical application of moral principle. In other words, through an integrated system of ethics and educational theory, it can be discussed that how it is specifically possible to foster virtue and through what kind of system the content of duties of virtue should be taught.
Based on the stage of education, education system of duties of virtue consists of four stages
the stage of discipline which is aimed at development of basic morality
the stage of culturalization which pursues natural perfection
the stage of civicization which obtains social perfection through virtue of sociality and receptivity of our mind
the stage of moralization which is aimed at moral perfection and friendship. In addition, the educational methods presented in the education system of duties of virtue can be used consistently with the stage of education. In other words, in compliance with development of reason, teachers should be examples of virtue for students to imitate fulfilling duties of virtue in the first place, and gradually move on to moral catechism, socratic-dialogic method, and ascetic based on braveness and happiness.
Kants Doctrine of Virtue and education of duties of virtue have two moral educational implication. First, Kants Doctrine of Virtue and education system of duties of virtue paved the way to integrate the content and the form of moral education. Second, Kants Doctrine of Virtue and education system of duties of virtue have much to suggest to the importance of school community and to the role of ethics teachers as the requirements for a successful moral education.
