'주변'에서 '개별'로 향하는 작품 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 주변에 대한 나의 관점을 제시하고, 그 관점이 나의 작업에서 실천되는 모습을 서술한다. 존재의 고유한 특성, 즉 개별성은 우리가 속한 사회에 의해 추구해야 할 표준인 중심과 극복해야 할 주변으로 구분되곤 한다. 나는 나의 개별성이 주변화되는 경험을 통해 주변의 입장에서 이러한 현상에 주목하였다. 주변이 된다는 것은 그것이 본래 가졌던 의미로부터 소외된다는 것이다. 나는 주변으로서 나의 경험과, 페미니즘‧생태주의‧미국의 유색인 이주민에 관한 사회학적 논의를 통해 그것의 다양한 측면을 이해하면서, 소외에서 벗어나 개별이 되는 방법을 모색하였다. 이 과정에서 주변을 바라보는 나의 관점은 변화를 겪었다. 주변은 사회로부터 소외된 곳이기도 하고, 사회에 저항하는 곳이기도 했다. 주변을 사회 바깥에 있는 곳으로 보는 이러한 관점은 주변인 스스로를 부끄럽게 여기거나, 중심과 주변의 범주를 견고하게 만드는 등 한계가 있었다. 나는 이러한 문제를 보완하기 위해 새로운 관점의 주변을 구상한다. 이 주변은 사회 안에서, 범주에 포획되지 않는 개별을 만듦으로써 중심에 침투하고 그것을 변화시킨다. 이러한 침투는 주변이 중심에 대립하기보다 연대할 때, 그리고 그렇게 추구하는 개별을 서로 이어져 있는 존재로 이해할 때 가능해진다. 이러한 관점에서 나는 동시대인이 겪고 있는 소외의 여러 가지 측면과, 그런 소외를 넘어 개별로 향하는 나의 작업을 보여준다. 나는 새로운 것에 주목하는 문화적 편향으로 인해 흔하고 반복되는 삶의 기반이 무시되고, 숙련을 도외시하는 분위기로 인해 물질적 토대와 관계를 잃고, 양적 성과와 스펙터클을 지향하는 풍토 속에 작가와 관객 모두 소외되고 있다고 보았다. 나는 흔하고 반복되는 것에 주목하고, 재료를 다룸에 있어 길들이고 길들여지는 관계를 맺는 작업을 통해 스펙터클과는 무관한 작품을 만든다. 이렇게 만들어진 작품은 존재의 유한함과 연약함을 드러낸다. 유한함과 연약함은 중심 문화에서 극복해야 할 부정적인 것으로 치부된다. 하지만 나의 작품에서 유한함과 연약함은 그 대상의 개별성을 인식하게 한다. 그리고 우리 존재가 모두 유한하고 연약하다는 측면에서, 주변은 보편이 되며 그러한 보편성 위에서 서로 이어져 있음을 느끼게 한다.

This study presents my perspective on marginality and describes how I practiced that perspective in my works. Individuality as unique characteristics of being are often divided into central as standard to be pursued, and marginal as one to be overcome. I paid attention to this phenomenon from a marginal position on the based on the personal experience that my individuality has been marginalized. Being marginalized means that it is alienated from its original meaning. In addition to my personal experience as marginal, my studies on feminism, ecology, and sociological issues of colored immigrants in the USA expanded my understanding of marginality and made me seek ways to be an individuality beyond alienation. Through this process, my view of the marginal has changed. The margin was the place where alienated from society and also where resistance against society occurred. This view regarding the margin as a place outside society has limitations such as to make ashamed of yourself as the marginalized and to solidify the category division between central and marginal To redeem these problems, I envision the new perspective of marginality. This marginal infiltrates into central and changes it by creating the individuality that could be in the society, but not to be captured in the category. Such infiltration becomes possible when the marginal is in solidarity with the central rather than confronting it. And also when the individuality is pursued and understood as connected beings. From this point of view, I focus on various aspects of alienation experienced by contemporaries, and my works show how to move toward the individuality beyond such isolation. The cultural bias toward new things has caused the common and repetitive basis of life to be neglected. In the air of neglect of skill, artists relation with the material foundation was lost. Both the artists and the audience are alienated in the cultural climate of pursuing quantitative achievements and spectacles. I create works unrelated to the spectacle by paying attention to common and repetitive things and establishing a relationship with materials to tame and be tamed in dealing with them. The work made in this way reveals the finitude and vulnerability of being. Finitude and vulnerability are regarded as negatives to be overcome in the central culture. However, finitude and vulnerability in my work lead to awareness of the individuality of the object. In terms that all of our beings are finite and vulnerable, marginal becomes universal, and on such universality we feel that we are connected to each other.
