Abstract
Ranging with the Received Signal Strength (RSS) has low complexity and doesnt require subtle hardware, so it is well-suited to Ad-Hoc wireless sensor networks. Since signal strength varies by site, analysis of a network environment is required. The precedent approach that considers indoor hallway structure as slab waveguide is well defined. However, it requires lots constraints and approximations to solve wave equation for slab waveguide. This paper cites the more simplified waveguide model to analyze the path loss without any complex equations. Taking into account various factors that affect the path loss, an exponential attenuation coefficient is proposed. The result of the path loss estimation at 2.4 GHz is compared with measurements and a ray-tracing simulation. Comparison results show that the proposed model well predicts path loss in indoor hallway structure which can be utilized for radio wave ranging.
