Holographic optical elements (HOEs) are very fascinating optical devices based on the holography technique and have been spotlighted in augmented reality (AR) applications recently. The HOEs have optically see-through property due to their high angular-selectivity, which has extensive potential to be employed as an imaging combiner for the AR devices. Various functions of optical components, including a mirror, a lens, and a diffuser, can be implemented with the thin HOE film. This advanced functionality can replace the conventional bulky optics with HOEs for a compact form factor in AR near-eye displays. In addition, multi-function HOEs can be realized with multiplexed recording, and mass production based on the optical recording is possible. Due to these powerful advantages, the HOEs have especially tremendous potential for AR display systems. In this invited paper, we introduce several HOEs classified by optical functions and conclude with research proposals and demonstrations for AR displays utilizing them.-
