Abstract

While several articles regard Colson Whitehead's The Nickel Boys as a novel of historical realism (Salván 2), this essay analyzes the novel through the framework of "Historiographic Metafiction," which is coined by Linda Hutcheon at A Poetics of Postmodernism. The reason for classifying The Nickel Boys as a historiographic metafiction is that this novel rearranges and reconstructs historical events to express the author's consciousness of existing history—a hidden story of the Jim Crow era. To prove this premise, this essay will explore and examine the three critical questions that Whitehead addresses throughout the novel: If revealed history is this terrible, what would the hidden history be like?; Could King's spirit have survived the history of violence?; How can modern black realism and the idealism of the civil rights movement generation be integrated? The first question allows readers to see American society from the inside and outside and offers reasonable grounds for a re-view of American history. The second question is a remembrance for the black people who died silently during the Jim Crow era, and a re-examination of the violence that took their lives. And, it is also emphasized by Whitehead that the existence of Elwood, who eventually dies without being able to tell the world Nickel's secret, has limitations in the spirit of the civil rights movement at the level of individual practice. The main subject of analysis—the third question—is how the limitations of the spirit of the civil rights movement identified can be supplemented in modern American society. Whitehead argues that in order to properly inherit the spirit of the civil rights movement in modern American society, re-recognition of history at the community level and acceptance of members of society are necessary. Through the above three questions, Whitehead diagnoses the racial problems of the Jim Crow era and suggests how to integrate the consciousness of the civil rights movement into modern society so that the problem does not repeat.

일각에서는 콜슨 화이트헤드의 『니클의 소년들』을 사실주의 역사 소설이라고 간주하지만, 본고에서는 이 소설을 린다 허천이 『포스트 모더니즘 시학』(A Poetics of Postmodernism)에서 제시한 "역사기술 메타픽션"이라는 구조 아래 분석하고자 한다. 『니클의 소년들』의 장르를 이렇게 분석하고자 하는 이유는 이 소설이 역사적 사건을 재배열하거나 재구성하여 기존의 역사—짐 크로 시대의 숨겨진 이야기들—에 대한 저자의 의식을 표현하기 때문이다. 이 전제를 증명하기위해 본고에서는 화이트헤드가 소설에서 제기한 세 가지의 중요한 질문들을 분석해볼 것이다: "드러난 역사가 이 정도로 참혹했다면, 가려진 역사는 어떠했을까?"; "킹 목사의 정신이 폭력의 역사에서 살아남을 수 있었겠는가?; "현대 흑인의 현실주의와 민권운동 세대의 이상주의적 정신은 어떻게 통합될 수 있는가?" 첫 번째 질문은 독자들로 하여금 짐 크로 시대의 미국 사회를 내부와 외부에서 관찰할 수 있게 해주며, 그에 따라 미국 역사를 일반적인 흑인 시민의 시각으로 다시 봐야한다는 합리적인 근거를 마련해준다. 두 번째 질문은 짐 크로 시대 동안 소리 없이 죽어간 흑인들에 대한 호명이며, 이 작업은 그들의 삶을 앗아간 폭력을 재조명한다. 또한 화이트헤드는 니클 감화원의 비밀을 세상에 알리지 못하고 죽은 주인공 엘우드의 존재를 통해 민권운동 정신이 개인적인 수준에서는 명확한 한계를 지닌다는 사실을 지적한다. 이 두 번째 질문에서 확인한 민권운동 정신의 한계점을 현대 미국 사회에서 어떻게 보완할 수 있는지에 대한 탐구가 작품에 대한 본고의 최종 분석 대상이다. 화이트헤드는 현대 미국 사회에서 민권운동 정신을 제대로 계승하기 위해서는 지역사회 차원의 역사 재인식과 사회구성원들의 인정이 필요하다고 주장한다. 이와 같이 화이트헤드는 위의 세 가지 질문들을 통해 짐 크로 시대의 문제를 진단하고, 그것이 되풀이되지 않도록 민권운동 의식을 현대 사회에 통합시킬 방안을 제시한다.
