예술가의 생태 시민성 형성과정에 대한 사례연구

Abstract

지속가능성과 관련한 담론은 현재 예술계의 중요 화두이다. 국립현대미술관, 국립중앙박물관 등 국가 주요 문화예술기관과 유명 사립미술관들을 필두로 지속가능성 관련 전시와 다양한 전시 연계 프로그램이 진행되고 있다. 예술 작품은 그 중심에 있으며, 이면에는 지속가능성에 대한 고민을 자신만의 방식으로 풀어낸 예술가들이 있다. 일견 달라 보이는 예술가의 표현과정에는 사회문제에서 비롯된 공통적인 문제의식이 존재하며, 표현을 통해 더 나은 방향을 제시했다는 점에서 환경 교육적 함의를 도출할 수 있는 여지가 있다. 따라서, 이 연구에서는 8명의 예술가를 대상으로 진행한 질적 사례 연구를 통해 기후 위기 시대의 다양한 문제의식을 다루는 예술가의 생태 시민성 형성과정을 살펴보았다. 이후 무엇이 예술가의 생태 시민성 형성과정에 영향을 미쳤는지, 생태 시민성 형성과정이 작품 활동 과정과 삶에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지 분석하고 환경 교육적 함의를 도출하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 예술가의 생태 시민성 형성과정에 영향을 미치는 요인은 표현과정 전반과 변혁적 역량임을 알 수 있었다. 예술가는 삶과 표현과정 속에서 행위 주체성을 행사해 왔으며, 이는 변혁적 역량 강화에 도움이 되었다. 이는 예술가들이 기후 위기에서 비롯된 딜레마를 마주했을 때 생태 시민성이 지향하는 방향으로 나아갈 수 있는 계기로 작용하였다. 둘째, 예술가의 생태 시민성 형성과정이 작품 활동 과정과 삶에 어떠한 영향을 주었는지를 파악할 수 있었다. 예술가는 생태 시민성 형성과정을 통해 인간 중심적 사고방식을 반성하였고, 이는 자신의 사고방식과 삶을 되돌아보는 계기가 되었다. 이들은 재료 선택, 주제 선택 등 자신의 사적 영역인 작품 활동에서 변화할 수 있는 방안을 모색하였으며, 자신의 삶 전반을 되돌아보고 배려의 영역을 확장하여 행동하는 계기를 만들어갔다. 셋째, 예술가의 생태 시민성 형성과정이 지닌 환경교육적 함의를 도출할 수 있었다. 현행 환경교육의 일부가 규범, 지식 등을 단편적으로 전달하는 것에 대한 문제의식이 계속해서 제기되고 있다. 표현과정을 통해 자신의 역량을 종합적으로 발휘할 수 있는 교육방식을 구성함으로써, 자칫 균형을 잃을 수 있다는 한계를 지닌 몇몇 형식・비형식 교육에 대안을 제시할 수 있을 것이다. 학생들의 수준과 알맞은 쟁점을 연계하여 예술 프로젝트를 구성하거나, 이를 지원할 수 있는 협력적 요소를 학교 문화 전반에 배치하는 방식 등을 예로 들 수 있다. 마지막으로 사회문화적 의미 또한 도출할 수 있었다. 예술가는 관객과의 상호작용을 통해 인식과 성찰의 범주를 확장시키기도 하였다. 따라서 문화예술기관, 교육기관 등은 지속가능성에 대한 담론장을 확대하여 예술의 지속가능성에 대한 고민을 함께할 필요가 있다.

The discourse on sustainability is an important topic in the current art world. Sustainability-related exhibitions and various exhibition-linked programs are underway, led by major national cultural and artistic institutions such as the National Museum of Contemporary Art and the National Museum of Korea. Art is at the heart of it, and behind it are artists who have solved their own problems about sustainability in their own ways. In the process of expression for artists that seem disparate at first glance, there is a shared sense of problems stemming from social problems and there is room for environmental education implications in that they presented a better direction through expression. Therefore, through a qualitative case study of eight artists, this study examines the process of forming ecological citizenship of artists dealing with cognizance of various problems in the era of the climate crisis. Afterward, this study derives what influences the formation of the artist's ecological citizenship and how the formation of ecological citizenship influences the process and life of works, and environmental educational implications, finding the following results. First, it was found that the factors influencing the formation of an artist's ecological citizenship were the overall expression process and Transformative competence. Artists have exercised their agency in the process of life and expression, which has helped strengthen their Transformative competence. This creates opportunities for artists to move in the direction of ecological citizenship when faced with dilemmas stemming from the climate crisis. Second, it was possible to grasp how the formation of artists ecological citizenship influences their work processes and life. Artists reflected on their human-centric thinking through the process of forming ecological citizenship, which offers opportunities to reflect on their thinking and life. They sought ways to change in their private domains of work—such as selecting materials and selecting themes—and created opportunities to reflect back on their entire lives and expand their areas of consideration for actions. Third, it was possible to derive the environmental education implications of the artist's process of forming ecological citizenship. A sense of problem continues to be raised about the fragmentary delivery of norms and knowledge as part of current environmental education. By constructing an educational method that can comprehensively demonstrate one's capabilities through the expression process, alternatives can be presented to formal and non-formal education processes that have limitations in terms of losing balance. Examples include forming art projects by linking the level of students and appropriate issues or placing cooperative elements that can support them throughout the school culture. Finally, sociocultural meaning can also be derived. Artists expanded the categories of perception and reflection through interactions with their audiences. Therefore, cultural and artistic institutions and educational institutions need to expand their discourse on sustainability to share concerns about the sustainability of art.
