양질의 댓글 공론장은 어떻게 형성되는가?: 네이버 정치 뉴스를 중심으로

Abstract

High-quality public sphere serves as the fundamental principle of deliberative democracy in which citizens put their heads together to solve social problems based on voluntary association, free will, logical conversation. Citizens who are equipped with a high-quality public forum can grasp the real problems and come up with reasonable solutions. News comment sections in portals, which represent the ideal public sphere, has hitherto led to numerous adverse effects on online communication, particularly in the realm of political news. These comment section maladies have mainly been attributed to the media outlets who are responsible for news production and portals who are responsible for distribution. In light of this, the paper aims to investigate the impact of article quality and comment policies on the formation of a high-quality news comment sphere. Degree of issue controversy, Headline bias, and Ideology of news source were measured for the former and Way the comments are exposed, Way the comments are listed, and Comment sticker type were for the latter. The quality of the news comment section was conceptualized into three factors : civic virtue, logical rationality, and opinion diversity. The paper conducted multiple linear regression to figure out whether the two big independent variables affect these three sub-dependent variables. Taking into account the variations in the article styles and specific comment policies among the media outlets, the paper used a random effect model. Mediating effects of the number of news comments were also analyzed. As a result, degree of issue controversy, headline bias, and article recommendation sticker had a negative effect on the civic virtue of the news comment section. In addition, degree of issue controversy, article recommendation sticker restricted the logical rationality of the comment section, whereas headline bias improved it. Lastly, headline bias and ideology of news source negatively affected opinion diversity of the comment section. The mediating effect of the number of news comments depended on each variable relationship. This paper tried to seek some breakthroughs for a high-quality online comment sections based on objective web data, rather than users' subjective perceptions.

양질의 공론장은 사회 내 다양한 주체들이 자발적 결사와 자유의지, 이성적 대화를 바탕으로 당면한 문제를 해결하는 숙의 민주주의의 근본 원리로 작동한다. 양질의 공론장이 갖추어진 사회의 구성원들은 현실의 문제를 파악하고 설득력 있는 해결책을 도출할 수 있다. 이러한 이상적 공론장의 모습이 구현되어있는 포털의 뉴스 댓글은 그것의 사회적 역할과 기능에도 불구하고 이제까지 수많은 온라인상의 의사소통 부작용을 초래하였다. 특히 정치 뉴스 영역에서 크게 나타나는 댓글 공론장의 문제는 그 책임 주체로 그간 뉴스를 생산하는 언론사와 유통하는 포털이 지목되어왔다. 이에 이 연구는 언론사 영역의 기사 품질과 포털 영역의 댓글 정책이 양질의 뉴스 댓글 공론장 형성에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 기사 품질은 이슈의 갈등 정도와 헤드라인 논조 경향성, 정보원 편향성이라는 하위 변인으로, 댓글 정책은 댓글 노출 방식과 댓글 나열 방식, 그리고 댓글 스티커 종류의 종류라는 하위 변인으로 세분화하였다. 댓글 공론장의 질은 (1) 시민적 덕성 (2) 논리적 합리성 (3) 의견 다양성이라는 세 가지 요인으로 개념화하였으며, 독립변인에 따라 해당 요인들이 어떻게 변화하는지 알기 위한 다중 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 이때, 언론사별로 기사 문체와 세부 댓글 정책이 모두 다르다는 점에서, 언론사 변인을 고려한 임의효과모형(random effect model)을 설정하였다. 또한, 기사의 전체 댓글 수가 위의 관계들을 매개하는지 확인하기 위한 매개효과 분석도 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 기사 품질 중 이슈의 갈등 정도와 헤드라인의 논조 경향성, 댓글 정책 중 기사 추천 스티커는 댓글 공론장의 시민적 덕성을 저해하는 요인으로 나타났다. 또한, 이슈의 갈등 정도와 기사 추천 스티커는 댓글 공론장의 논리적 합리성을 떨어뜨렸고, 헤드라인 논조 경향성은 합리성을 증진하였다. 마지막으로, 헤드라인 논조 경향성과 정보원 편향성은 댓글 공론장의 의견 다양성에 부정적 영향을 미쳤다. 댓글 수의 매개효과는 개별 변인 관계에 따라 불규칙하게 나타났다. 이 연구는 양질의 댓글 공론장 형성에 대한 실질적 해답을 이용자의 주관적 인식이 아닌 객관적인 웹 데이터를 통해 찾고자 했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
