Abstract
The advent of fast charging technologies has revolutionized the field of energy storage, promising shorter charging times for lithium metal batteries. However, the pursuit of rapid charging capabilities presents several challenges, primarily due to the formation of lithium dendrites, which in turn, can lead to thermal runaway and safety risks. In this review, we first discuss the growth behavior of lithium metal in both liquid and solid-state electrolytes. Then, we outline the challenges and recent progress in lithium metal batteries, particularly under fast charging conditions. Furthermore, we present comprehensive summary of the literatures on lithium metal batteries cycled at high current densities, investigating their performance with both liquid and solid-state electrolytes. Finally, we propose perspectives on various strategies aimed at addressing the challenges associated with lithium metal batteries under fast charging conditions. Fast charging offers the opportunity to significantly reduce charging times, enhancing the convenience and practicality of electric vehicles. However, the accelerated charging rate poses considerable challenges and issues that require careful consideration. In this review, we discuss the recent progress of lithium metal batteries with liquid and solid-state electrolytes and provide insights into future perspectives.image
