Abstract
Physical properties, biodegradability, and irradiation effect of pectin-based film were investigated. Film blends were prepared using citrus pectin, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), corn starch (CS), soy protein isolate (SPI), and glycerol at different compositions. Hunter color C-value was increased, whereas a*-value was decreased, with irradiation dose. Film transparency was decreased with SPI addition. Mechanical properties including tensile strength, and elongation at break were highest in pectin/glycerol/CMC/PVA (P2). Irradiation of film blends increased mechanical integrity although not always dose-dependently. Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed relatively higher growth and total organic carbon contents than Paenibacillus polymyxa in media containing films. Results indicated irradiation can be used to enhance physical properties of biodegradable film prepared from agricultural by-products. Optimum irradiation dose for film blend should be determined prior to application.
