Abstract
This paper reviewed trends and future directions in performance-based pay in Korea and

the United States. In the 1990s, especially after the 1997-98 financial crisis, Korean firms are

vigorously trying to change their management system from a seniority-based, inflexible one

to a performance-based one. This paper explained how individual-based incentives plans and

group-sbased incentives plans are used in leading firms. This paper also suggests how Korean

firms can improve their performance-based pay system.
