Abstract
Molecular hydrogen is a nonpolluting fuel that may play a role in the
future energy economy. Cyanobacteria are efficient systems for the
production of H2 from water using solar energy. The efficiency was
defined by the ratio of produced H2 energy to absorbed light energy.
To measure the absorbed light energy, IR and opalescent plate method
was used. Cyanobacteria absorbed the light in a visible range but not in
an infrared range. Therefore, IR can be used for measuring the net
amount of light energy absorbed by cells. For measuring the
conversion efficiency from light energy to H2 energy, a rectangular
biochamber was used. Quantum meter and Radiometer was used to
measuring the light intensity transfer the chamber. Cyanobacteria
Anabaena variabilis was cultured at BG 11 with 3.6mM NaNO3 medium
and the light intensity was 40~50 μmol/m2/s at growth phase and
120~140 μmol/m2/s at hydrogen production phase. The maximum
hydrogen production was 50 mL for 42 hours and growth density of
1.15 g/L was observed. Photoproduction of hydrogen at rates of 4.14
mL H2/g dry cell weight/h was observed and conversion efficiency
from light to hydrogen energy was 1.6% on average and 3.9% at
maximum.
