dc.description.abstractThe collective acceleration of gaseous ions from a well-localized ion source situated immediately downstream of a relativistic electron beam source has been investigated experimentally. The electron beam is emitted from a 4 mm diameter tungsten cathode located 6 mm form a stainless steel anode which has a 20 mm hole on axis through which the beam passes into the downstream region. Here the electrons collide with a gas cloud injected by a fast rise puff valve producing ions. Using time-of flight diagnostics it is found that the velocity of the fastest nitrogen ion is approximately 0.03 c, corresponding to a maximum energy of 0.5 MeV per nucleon.-
