Abstract
Coherence is a necessary relation for a sequence of propositions to constitute a discourse. It may be defined in terms of relations a proposition may have with respect to the thematic progression of the discourse, (an)other proposition(s) within the same discourse, and/the context of situation. The coherence relation is fundamentally a semantic, pragmatic relation and is not necessarily required to be represented through linguistic expressions. Language, however, uses a number of formal cohesive devices to overtly express the relation. Section 2 briefly discusses various features of the anaphoric relation which is one of the most typical cohesive devices. Despite the fact that language possesses various formal devices, we find abundant cases of the coherence relation only implicitly existing in a discourse. In section 3, after briefly observing the patterns of information distribution in connection with the coherence relation, we discuss various features of implicitly recognizable coherence relations. When coherence relations are implicit the hearer must be able to infer some implicit propositions so that he may relate them to some of the overtly expressed propositions in order to interpret the given discourse coherently. Certain implicit propositions may be automatically inferred based on the language users' general knowledge which includes the kind of knowledge forms discussed in such theories as the frame theory or the schemata theory. Other implicit propositions require further steps of inferring processes, thus not being available automatically. The types of the coherence relation are not easily susceptible of comprehensive and explicit classificatory description due to its complexity and subtlety. It is attempted, however, to present a tentative classification of types of some of the more distinct coherence relations with a brief discussion for each of them.
