This paper discusses the necessity, importance and possible framework of contrastive speech act analysis. The basic assumption underlying this paper is that languages may not differ greatly in the classes of speech acts and the rules constitutive of these acts, but that there exist significant differences between languages in linguistic strategies for realizing and interpreting speech acts. An attempt is made to substantiate this assumption with data, though limited in amount, from English and Korean. Also discussed very briefly is the implication of such contrastive analyses for the theory and practice of foreign language education.-
