A Study on the Development of Graduate Programs of Secondary School Teaching in College of Education

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop the graduate programs of secondary school teaching in college of education with special emphasis on social studies education in secondary schools. As the important role of secondary school for citizenship education is recognized, special attention to secondary school teaching is recently increasing. As a result, Seoul National University newly opened doctoral progrms in secondary school teaching for the first time in Korea. Under this situation, it is urgently needed to develop graduate programs of secondary school teaching for doctoral degree. From this study, it is recommended that the graduate programs of secondary school teaching should offer teaching method courses such as the studies on objectives of secondary school teaching, secondary school curriculum, teaching methods, teaching materials, school teachers, policy on subject matters, organization and climate of schools, research methods, and comparative studies. It must be also emphasized that secondary school teachers should study not only scholarly subject courses such as social sciences or natural sciences but also teaching met1tod courses mentioned above. It is suggested that teaching method courses should be about 50% of all courses. This is equivalent to 4 courses among 9 of Masters, program, and 6 courses among 12 of doctoral program.
