아도르노 철학에서의 이성의 파괴 －계몽의 변증법에 대한 정치철학적 비판－

Abstract

아도르노의 계몽의 변증법은 20세기의 야만이라는 역사적 사실을 기초로 이성과 지배의 상호 연관을 설명하는 하나의 전형을 제시하는 것으로 생각된다. 이와 관련하여 『계몽의 변증법』은 서로 긴밀하게 연관되어 있는 다음의 세 가지 주장으로 요약될 수 있다. 첫째, 20세기의 야만은 계몽의 필연적인 변증법적 자기 파괴의 결과이다(계몽의 변증법). 둘째, 이성은 필연적으로 억압적 지배와 결합한 도구적 이성으로 전락한다(총체적 이성 비판). 셋째, 지배는 곧 억압이며 정당한 권력은 가능하지 않다(아나키즘). 문제는 계몽의 변증법에서 전개되는 아도르노의 총체적 이성 비판과 그 귀결인 아나키즘이 권력의 정당성이라는 정치철학의 근본문제를 해소시켜버린다는데 있다. 이 논문은 이러한 해소가 타당한지를 검증하는 작업에 할애되어 있으며, 『계몽의 변증법』에서 전개되는 아도르노의 세 가지 주장(계몽의 변증법, 총체적 이성 비판, 아나키즘)을 이성과 권력 정당성의 상호연관이라는 문제를 중심으로 비판적으로 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. Adornos Dialectic of Enlightenment can be summarized by the following three arguments. 1) Dialectic of enlightenment: the origin of barbarity in the 20th century is to be found in the inevitable self-destruction of enlightenment. 2) Totalized critique of reason: reason inevitably declines into instrumental reason which is connected to suppressive ruling. 3) Radical anarchism: ruling is in itself suppressive and legitimate authority is not possible. The problem is that in the dialectic of enlightenment, Adornos totalized critique of reason and consequent radical anarchism deny the possibility of legitimate political authority, the main theme of political philosophy. This paper aims to examine the validity of Adornos three arguments in Dialectic of Enlightenment, focusing on the interrelation between reason and the legitimacy of authority.
