사실의 산출과 실험실 공간

Abstract

실험적 사실의 산출이 실험실이라는 공간에서 어떻게 이루어지는지를 탐구하고자 한다. 라투르와 울거의 기록하기 개념을 중심으로 논의를 진행하게 된다. 이러한 논의를 전개해 가면서 과학적 사실의 성격을 검토하는 라투르와 울거의 견해를 논리 실증주의의 사실관 및 상대주의와 비교하는 작업을 시도할 것이다. 라투르와 울거가 주장하는 사실의 구성은 자연과 무관하게 사실을 만들어낸다는 것이 아니다. 그렇다고 자연에 있는 그대로의 사실을 곧바로 잡아낸다는 것도 아니다. 그것은 실험 도구를 써서 신뢰할 수 있는 실험적 사실을 얻어내는 길고, 느리며, 실천적인 장인 적 작업을 의미한다. 실험 결과에 대한 대안적 해석의 가능성은 열려 있다. 논쟁이 진행 중인 경우만이 아니라 논쟁 이후에도 여전히 그러하다. 이것이 실험 과학의 동적 안정성이다. 어떤 미시적 사실은 특정 실험 도구, 즉 기록하기 장치에 의존하여 알려질 수 있을 뿐이다. TRF(H)가 그 예이다. 이런 의미에서 실험적 사실은 국소적이다. 또한 도구 의존적 실재의 의미를 TRF(H)와 같은 경우에서 보여줄 수 있다. 하지만 국소성과 구성의 관념은, 상대주의와 반실재론을 의미하는 것이 아니라 오히려 합리주의와 제한된 의미의 실재론, 즉 도구 의존적 실재론을 옹호해준다. 사실의 구성이라는 개념은 실험실 공간에서 신뢰할 만한 사실의 산출이 도구 의존적으로 어떻게 이루어지는가를 이해하는 데 도움이 되는 개념이기 때문이다.

In this paper, I will examine how experimental facts are produced in laboratory spaces. I will argue around the concept of inscription raised by Latour and Woolgar. In such an argument, I try to compare the view of Latour and Woolgars on the nature of scientific facts with logical positivism and relativism. The concept of construction of facts by Latour and Woolgar does not mean that scientists make facts regardless of nature; nor does it mean they grasp the brute facts in nature. Rather, it refers toong, slow, and practical craftsmans work by use of experimental instruments. There are possibilities of alternative interpretations of experimental results both in the process of experimental debates and even following the debates. It is a dynamic stability. Some microscopic facts can only be known by the help of specific experimental devices, i.e an inscription device. TRF(H) is such an example. Experimental facts are local in this sense. I show the meaning of the concept of instrument-dependent reality by referring to cases like TRF(H). Locality and the concept of construction, however, do not support relativism and anti-realism but rather rationalism and realism in a limited sense. The concept of construction of facts help to understand how reliable facts can be realized in laboratory spaces.
