Abstract

This is an attempt to find out the longest consonants in intrinsic duration and to uncover how preceding and following vowel height affects the medial consonant duration in VCV disyllables. Four lists of VCV disyIlables were presented to the speaker and his utterances of the words were recorded on a Nagra IV-D at 15 ips from a sound-conditioned studio. Each list contained 8 disyllable words each beginning and ending with /i/ or /a/, and -differing only in the consonant. The consonants were English voiceless obstruents / p t e k f θ s s/. The recording was transferred to a Sieman oscillograph. Nagra output was a mplified for osciIIograph recording through one Honeywell Accudata 112 amplifier and -directly recorded on one channel. Printouts were obtained on active galvanometers at 200 mm per second (paper speed)
