- Abstract
- This paper discusses three types of common expressions found in daily conversations to show that pragmatics is not only necessary but a1so essential for adequate description of certain aspects of the Korean language. Throughout the discussion, the rules of politeness proposed by Robin Lakoff are assumed as the underlying pragmatic rules.
Examples of the first type include such expressions as sensayng-nim, ppalli osipsio (literally, come quickly, sir),sensayng-nim, kath.i kasipsita (literally, lets go together, sir),' etc. which are well-formed both syntactically and semantically but fail to be polite on pragmatic grounds.
