Abstract
This paper aims to describe the functions of the temporal/aspectual forms, {∅} and {ess} used in adverbial clauses-in particular, temporal and causal clauses which are introduced by the subordinate conjunctions, {l ttay} when and {nikka} since or because' respectively.
1) The subordinate clause by the conjunction, {l ttay} has a generic propensity, referring to a general statement for an indefìnite number of events to take place, while that by {nikka} is inclined to refer to a non-generic statement, i.e. an on-the-spot reporting of a contemporaneous event.
2) The temporal functions of the form {∅} in the subordinate clause may indicate present, past or future time depending entirely on the temporal references of the main clause involved.
3) The form {ess} may refer to simple past, perfective or resultative function under
the control of the temporal/aspectual functions of the main clause.
4) The temporal and aspectual references appearing in the subordinate clause rerely control that of the main clause.
