Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyse negative expression ani 'not' in Korean in the framework of Montague grammar. The underlying hypothesis is that an i must be treated as a basic expression not as a syncategorematically derived expression. According to Montagues categorial definition ani is a special functor expression mapping the category of its argument expression onto that of its value expression. Thus the category of ani is t/t when it modifies a sentence; IV/IV when it modifies a verb phrase; T/T when it modifies a noun phrase; (IV/IV)/(IV/IV) when it modifies an adverb, and so on. This shows, that the traditional classification of negation into S-negation and VP-negation is ill-motivated. Montagues categorial syntax also allows the scope of ambiguity in negative sentences. to be successfully treated as a relation between ani and its argument expression.
