- Abstract
- After a brief discussion on possible analyses of the derìvation of the Korean relative clause, I have suggested that the zero pronoun hypothesis is the most adequate one on the basis of some characteristics of non-configurational languages.
Having defined Korean resumptive pronouns to be bound by the head noun, I have attempted to show where the resumptive pronouns appear. ln the embedded sentence of the relative clause, they appear in positions such as subject and object but they do not appear in the noun positions followed by the postpositions. However, in the main relative clause, they seem to appear on1y in the noun positions followed by some postpositions.
It is also investigated that whereas in English a choice of the gap or the resumptive pronoun may result in difference in interpretation, in Korean the zero pronoun or the resumptive pronoun does not result in any difference in meaning.
