- Abstract
- American English has become different from British English and English spoken in other parts of the world. This difference is due primarily to archaic retentions of Elizabethan English and the incorroration of nonEnglish elements from American Indian, Spanish, French, German and Dutch.
The innovations that have developed on the American continent have contributed to the distinctive characteristics of American English. These innovations are evident chiefly in the vocabulary. This paper deals especially with the rationale and the process of development of words coined in the United States. Word innovations most commonly result from compounding and derivation, but initials, acronyms and blending are a1so frequently responsible for changes in the American vocabulary.
