- Abstract
- Emphasizing the importance of pronunciation in the TEFL to Koreans, the speaker contrasts the inventories of the phonemes of the two languages and points out the Korean learners problems. It is also pointed out that the discrepancy between English pronunciation and the spelling makes the problems worse, and the re-adoption of the IP A symbols in the middle school textbook is strongly suggested.
English speech rhythm and the nature of schwa (d) are discussed. It is suggested that besides American pronunciation, RP or BBC pronunciation is well worth learning especially for a large international gathering like the Olympic Games.
The speech is concluded emphasizing the necessity of the correct pronunciation more for hearing than for speaking at early stages, and phonetic training for the teachers is suggested
