Abstract

This is a short survey of morphology in the generative paradigm with particular reference to the organization of the lexicon. First we will outline the Lexicalist Hypothesis that made possible the return of morphology. We will then discuss in brief a variety of different proposals for word formation advanced in the lexicalist framework, in particular, those of Halle(1973), Aronoff(1976), Lieber(1980), Selkirk(1982), Kiparsky(1983,1985), Rubach (1984), McCarthy(1979, 1981), etc. Today morphology is a field characterized by much on-going research. We have thus seen, in recent years, the development of several other theories, as well as a number of empirical studies. Not all of these are important enough to merit a special discussion, however.
