- Abstract
- Although Chomsky does not like to investigate the quantitative aspects of linguistic phenomena, it is likely to be obvious that the relative gravity(or importance) of all different rules must be considered in the mechanical implementation of linguistic ideas. This paper studied the frequency of phonetic/phonological rules in well-transcribed Korean data and found the ra마 of functional load among those rules. This study is able to support the economically optimal design of speech recognition/synthesis system by putting the highly ranked rules in the mainstream of processing while leaving minor rules in the negligible periphery.
In order to get the information on quantitative aspects of Korean sound system, most of the phonetic/phonological rules occurring in Korean are collected and also some sample Korean data are selected and investigated based upon the list of these rules. A detailed procedure for this voluminous investigation cannot be summarized here but its result can be shown briefly as follows. (T : phonetic rules, M: phonemic rules, O: others)
