Abstract
Based on the accomplishments of the patriotic grammarians such as Joo Shi-Kyung and Kim Doo-Bong, North Korea first adopted the linguistic theory developed by the Russian linguist Mar and then Lenin and Stalins theory about language through translation, and since the late 1960s they have developed a unique and practical linguistic theory called Juchei Eoneo Iron'. It is closely related with this varying trend in linguistics that North Korea has paid constant attention to the orthography, prescriptive grammar, lexicography and Maldadimgi(i.e., translating borrowed foreign words into Korean). On the other hand, although they are trying to make clear the structures of Korean or to explain the history of the Korean Language by adopting specific linguistic theories, South Korea never makes their linguistic research related with politics or political doctrines as they do in North Korea. It may be due to the different purpose and method of linguistic research in South Korea that they pay less attention to the practical problems such as orthography than North Korea.
