- Abstract
- The present study is an attempt to inquire into the nature of redundancy by comparing various examples of redundant expressions in English and Korean. For this purpose a corpus of redundant expressions in English and Korean was collected from written and spoken materials and categorized into three major types: those involving native words only, those involving native words and foreign words, and those involving foreign words only. A careful analysis of the data has revealed an interesting fact that in the case of English, redundant expressions involving pure English and Latinate words are most numerous and in the case of Korean, redundant expressions involving pure Korean and Sino-Korean words are by f ar the most numerous. This observation leads to a claim that redundancy is motivated by the speaker’s psychology to ensure that his message is conveyed properly. This claim is further supported by the fact that redundancy is more frequently encountered in informal spoken language than in formal written language. Viewed as such, redundancy seems to be a necessary evil.
