This paper describes the agreement phenomena of English coordinated NP containing the conjunction within the framework of Head—driven Phrase Structure Grammar. It also keeps pace with the standard theory of Pollard & Sag (1992), which introduces the general mechanism to explain the agreement phenomena, such as subcategorization, structure sharing and binding theory. Especially it emphasizes that so-called agreement can be explained properly by the structure sharing of semantic attribute, INDEX, of constituents participating in the agreement phenomena. It also permits the partial specification of feature structure of the constituents.
One of the thorny problems in describing the agreement is to describe the agreement of the constituent of coordinate structure. The coorinated NP in English is such an example. Traditionally the features for person such as [PER 1st], [PER 2nd] and [PER 3rd] are considered unanalyzable unit, I.e., monadic, but they are not appropriate in describing the coorinated NP in English. To overcome this inappropriateness, we adopt the unary feature system which is represented as 0 for 1st person, +XSP for 2nd person, and {+XSP, +THP} for 3rd person. And we use [sing] for a singular number and [plu] for a plural number in order to reflect the duality of English number system.
