Abstract
This paper aims at presenting the characteristics of deixis in spoken Korean.
These characteristics are drawn from a corpus of authentic spoken data. We focus on the verbs 이러, 그러 and 저러, which show special behavior in spoken language. In written language, most of these expressions have their (ante)cedents in the context. In spoken language, however, they do not usually have cedents in the preceding or following utterances. In many cases, they refer to something in the situation or in the (speakers) mind. Sometimes they are used as interjections or adverbs without any referential meaning. Their usuage is very special in spoken quotation structure. As a quotation verb, such deixis verbs are used far more frequently than the verb 하. In addition, they form a special quotation structure which is peculiar to spoken language.
