Abstract

Korean-Dynasty linguists on Chinese have made a worthwhile historical and theoretical contribution in the field of modern Chinese Linguistics. They made the study in Translation Institute (司譯院) bui1t in 1393. The research results appear in the following books: Hong Moo Cheng Un Yak Hun (洪武正韵譯訓). Sa Sheng Tong Ko (四聲通考), Ro Ker Ta(老乞大), Park Tong Sa(朴通事), Yuk Oah Lin Hia(譯語類解) and so on. The content in the books mentioned above can be summarized as the following: 1. They designed the letters for Chinese and systematically readjusted and noted down the modern Chinese phonetics. 2. They theoretically clarified the modern Chinese phonetics in many aspects. 3. On the view of contrastive linguistic, they found out the correspondent relation between Korean and Chinese, and proved its equality, common feature and flexibility. 4. They adjusted the Chinese phonetics system and the history of phonetic vicissitude by contemporary and historical survey. 5. They studied the connection of the phonetic between modern Korean-Chinese and modern Chinese. 1t has been a great achievement in studying the development from middle age Chinese system to modern Chinese system In one word, the significance of the research of Korean-Dynasty linguists is that they expressed the semantic symbols with the phonetic symbols.
