Abstract
This work tries to explain word order in Spanish based on pragmatic factors like topic and commentary, theme and rheme, and focus and background. Theoretically, this research starts from Siewierska's point of view about the word order which states that the familiarity hierarchy prevails upon the dominance hierarchy and the formal hierarchy. First of all, we have reviewed Gill Gaya's study in the domain of Spanish traditional grammar and we have recognized his insight about the position of the verb(in the second position of the sentence). Secondly, the analysis has defined the topic position determining it normally in the left-periphery with the pronominal copy in the rest of the sentence. We have examined Contreras' theme-rheme analysis of Spanish word order and we have observed that this Pragan method can explain little and lose much because in Spanish there exist many exceptions to the TR order. So we have introduced a focus-background analysis in the Spanish word order phenomenon which has been difficult to solve under the theme-rheme frame. Finally, we have considered interrelations between topic and focus and between these two factors and the definiteness. As a result, we can say that in Spanish the topic-order precedes the focus-order, and the topic must be constituted of definite noun phrase while the focus can be free from the definiteness of the NP.
